A Honda remote electronic car key, commonly known as a key fob battery, is helpful in controlling the car doors, trunk, and the alarm system. If you find yourself with a new fob, or if the battery has died on your existing fob, or if your fob has malfunctioned, you will need to program/reprogram it. Just remember that your remote will not work if the key is in the ignition. If you have lost your keyless entry remote, reprogram your Honda remote to protect your vehicle from theft. It’s easy to do yourself, and not necessary to go to a dealership. We will walk you through the 11-step process in this article.

How to Program a Honda Key Fob Battery

Step 1: Gather All the Remotes

You need to get all the remotes and have them together while you program. Actually, you only  need one remote to access the programming mode, but all the remotes need to be programmed at the same time.

Step 2: Replace the Battery

Replace the battery in any key fob that may be old. If you have a bad battery, it may pose some issues during the reprogramming. Check your owner’s manual for instructions on replacing the battery.

Step 3: Get Inside the Car and Close the Doors

Get inside the car, in the driver’s seat, with the car key fob(s). Close all the doors so that the process won’t be disturbed by an open door. Keep the doors unlocked.

Step 4: Turn on the Ignition

Insert the key into the ignition and turn to ‘On’ in order to power up the electrical systems. Don’t start the engine and don’t just turn it to the radio mode. The lights on the accessories should come on and the dashboard lights come on.

Step 5: Press the Lock Button on the Honda Remote Key

Within five seconds of turning the key to the ‘On’ position, press the fob’s LOCK button for one second.

Step 6: Turn the Honda Key to ‘Off’

Turn the key back to the ‘Off’ position.

Step 7: Repeat Steps 4 and 5

Repeat this process two more times for a total of three On/Off cycles. Do this within five seconds of the previous step.

Step 8: Turn Key Back to ‘On’

End the cycle with the key in the ‘On’ position, which will be the fourth turn of the key. This is going to send an indicator to your electronic control units that it is your key in the ignition sending out the signal. It saves the data afterward.

Step 9: Press the LOCK Button on the Remote

Press the LOCK button. The locks on your Honda will make a clunk noise exactly as they do when locking. Your doors have not locked. This indicates that you are in the remote programming mode. Do not turn the key off.

Step 10: Programming More than One Remote

If you need to program more than one remote, press the LOCK button on each additional remote for one second. You have five seconds to complete this step. The programming mode will be activated for a total of 10 seconds. Only 3 remotes can be programmed to each Honda.

After each remote is programmed, your locks will make the clunking sound, as if the doors have locked. When you hear the locking, you know that the remote has been successfully stored in the system’s memory.

Step 11: Turn the Key Off and Remove From the Ignition

Turn the key to the ‘Off’ position and remove it from the ignition. Test all of your remotes to ensure they have been successfully programmed.
